Overview

Some journeys lead to a destination. This one circles a legend.

Travel around Lake Superior—the Gem of the Great Lakes—through Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ontario. Arrive as the first brushstrokes of fall color begin to sweep across the Northwoods, bringing even more beauty to a landscape shaped by powerful water, ancient rock and centuries of history.

Rail, sail and soar your way around the lake. Cruise beneath the towering, mineral-streaked cliffs of Pictured Rocks, navigate the islands, lighthouses and sea caves of the Apostle Islands, and pass through the engineering marvel of the Soo Locks aboard the Miss Marie. Dine aboard a scenic train, then rise above the North Shore on the Lutsen Gondola as the lake and changing forest stretch toward the horizon.

Feel the power of the region at Tahquamenon Falls, Gooseberry Falls and Kakabeka Falls. Stand above the wild Porcupine Mountains at Lake of the Clouds, follow the shoreline along the Keweenaw Peninsula, and visit Split Rock Lighthouse, perched high above Lake Superior.

The stories surrounding the lake are just as compelling as the scenery. Hear the haunting legacy of the Edmund Fitzgerald, descend into Michigan’s copper-rich past at Quincy Mine, and explore the locomotives that connected the North at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. Cross into Canada to step inside the fur-trading era at Fort William Historical Park and discover the bush planes that opened the remote North at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre.

There is plenty of Northwoods personality along the way. Meet rescued bears at Oswald’s Bear Ranch, wander among the unexpected creations at Lakenenland Sculpture Park, stop at The Jampot Monastery Bakery and search for purple treasure at an Amethyst Mine. Explore the waterfront communities of Munising, Paradise, Grand Marais and Thunder Bay. Visit the famous Wawa Goose, and cheer on the action at the Jack Pine Lumberjack Show.

Ten days. Two countries. Three unforgettable cruises. A scenic dinner train. A mountaintop gondola. And one complete circle around the greatest of the Great Lakes.

This is not simply a tour of Lake Superior. It is the story, scenery and spirit of the lake—experienced from every angle.
